13th Street Winery, founded in 1998, celebrated over twenty-five years of winemaking in Niagara in 2023! Originally started by four amateur winemaker friends and located on 13th Street in Jordon Ontario, the winery was purchased in 2008 by the current owners: John Mann and Doug & Karen Whitty who moved the winery to the current location on Fourth Avenue in St. Catharines.

Both the Mann and Whitty families have deep roots in the Niagara community and share a common love of wine, food, art, and a genuine heart for hospitality. It was this shared appreciation that brought them together and inspired the vision for 13th Street Winery.

Together, the two families’ shared vision for the winery is on full display at the retail wine boutique on Fourth Avenue. Visit our tasting bar and enjoy a guided sampling of our wines, or relax on our seasonal verandah and enjoy the tranquillity of our beautiful surroundings. Wander our expansive grounds and discover the sculptures and artwork that adorn our property as well as the John Mann Gallery. And of course, no visit to 13th Street Winery is complete without a visit to 13th Street Bakery. Here, you can savour the delicious aromas of fresh baking, featuring local farm-fresh fruit, our legendary butter tarts, and so much more!

13th Street Winery evolved from a desire to create exceptional wines that reflect the unique terroir of Niagara, while also providing a place for guests to congregate and escape; to relax and discover; and to experience and learn.

It all started when Bob and Marzia decided they wanted to pursue a new path in life. Something out of the city to reconnect with nature, something more meaningful to pursue their passions, and something that combined their love of entertaining, food, and wine.

Bob and Marzia and their two daughters, Taylor and Sara, have always been risk takers in life. Always taking the road less travelled and putting in the extra work. When the pandemic hit and they lost their beloved Nonna, the family began to re-evaluate what was important to them. Opportunity arose to own and operate a winery in Niagara Wine Country and they jumped on it. They sold their family home in Mississauga, Marzia left her corporate job, and the four of them moved into the bungalow on the vineyard.

Pulling a complete 180 in life.

With the whole family involved in every aspect of the business, it’s never a dull moment at 180. Early mornings, (very) late nights, and weekends are dedicated to making their dream work. Together with their team, 180 focuses on high quality hand-crafted wines, great casual bistro fare, and memorable experiences.

For all the risk takers, the dream chasers, and the go-getters, experience the beauty of the road less travelled with 180 wines – from our family to yours.

It was in 1976, the first of the old Concord grapes were pulled out, the soil was prepped and 2.5 acres of imported Riesling and Chardonnay vines were hand planted.

At 4 years old, my job was to hold the new young vine steady in the freshly dug hole my dad had just shovelled moments before. While my mom would carefully cover the vine with dirt. Each hole was hand dug and covered in a 4 ft by 9 ft pattern.

After helping plant a number of vines, I had enough. My 4 year old self decided I would make a run for it, when my mom turned around to grab another shovel full of dirt. I saw my chance and I ran for it.

Thats my earliest memory of what was to become my life long experience of grape growing in Jordan Ontario.

Only a hand full of growers were planting vitis vinifera vines in Ontario in the 1970’s. My father knew, the climate here in Niagara was similar to that of the old country and they will be able to thrive and produce great wines.

The first wine made from our farm was this 1980 Gamay Nouveau from vines first planted in 1975. The wine was made from only three Niagara growers; John Neufeld, Joeseph Triolo and Ivan Dim. Gamay Beaujolais was well suited to Niagara’s cool climate, and was vinified by winemaker Herman Gras in the “Nouveau” style of wine that is traditionally released as an early celebration of the annual vintage and was originally consumed by grape growers and winemakers themselves as they celebrated a good harvest.

The architecture of the winery is influenced by the Fielding’s northern Ontario roots in the Haliburton Highlands. Designed by renowned architect Andre D’Elia of Superkül, the contemporary Canadian design is inspired by elements only be found in nature – wood, stone and sunlight. With the natural finishes and earthy tones, the design allows all the facets of nature to become one. Harbour Estates original owner, Fraser Mowat and his family have been involved with agriculture in the Niagara Peninsula for over 100 years. He is a fourth generation grower. His great grandfather came from Scotland in 1913, along with his grandfather, James Mowat, who was 13 years old at the time. They settled initially in Grimsby, working for a local farmer and then eventually purchased two peach farms on Lincoln Avenue in Beamsville. That is where Fraser’s father, William Mowat, grew up. He purchased a 17 acre peach farm on Mountainview Road in Beamsville in 1952. Fraser attended the University of Guelph and graduated in 1980 with a B.Sc. in agriculture specializing in horticulture.

At that point in life, Fraser and Darlene were married and their first child Ken had arrived. Fraser and Darlene purchased this current 38 acre property which backs onto Jordan Harbour in partnership with Fraser’s parents, who had sold their farm, and they farmed peaches together for 20 years.

In 1997 Fraser and Darlene planted the first Merlot grapes near the back of the property. In 1999, Fraser’s parents retired, and Fraser and Darlene decided to plant the whole property out in grapes. They pulled out 30 acres of peaches and planted it out to Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Harbour’s first vintage of wine was in 1999 and in 2000, opened the doors as a winery. The winery has grown and as a result an expansion was added in 2017 for more production room as well as a new retail store and seasonal patio for dining! Jump forward to June 2022. The winery is still family owned but has changed ownership. The Ng family has purchased the winery and the Mowat family continue to operate it!

Konzelmann is Niagara’s only lakefront winery, located on the shores of Lake Ontario. The Winery began in the small German town of Uhlbach, near the turn of the 19th century. A restauranteur named Friederich Konzelmann left the culinary trade to pursue the craft of winemaking. Bolstered from previous success in producing house wines for his restaurants, Friederich officially released his first vintage to the public in 1893. He would eventually produce 200,000 litres of excellent wine per year from an array of Germany’s celebrated aromatic varietals.

By 1980 Friedrich’s great grandson Herbert was 43, had a well established business and a growing family.

The winery was expanding and the demand for his product was increasing more quickly than the land could sustain. Contracts with growers were becoming increasingly costly and the price of buying additional land was high. A recreational trip through the wilderness of British Columbia seeded a profound love of the land and rumours of fledgling wine operations in Ontario and the Okanagan perked Herbert’s imagination. Subsequent visits produced evidence that Canada’s wine potential had been drastically underestimated by most of the world.

Marynissen Estates has its roots deeply embedded in the soil of Niagara-on-the-Lake. Located in the Four Mile Creek sub appellation, the estate is home to the oldest commercial planting of Cabernet Sauvignon in Canada. The property, an old pig barn, was purchased in 1953 by viticulture pioneer John Marynissen and his wife Adrianna. John and Adrianna began growing their own grapes in 1976, planting the classic European Vitis vinifera grape varietals Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Merlot and Gamay Noir.

At Marynissen Estates, we focus on small-lot winemaking showcasing our wines in a rustic yet modern style. We focus on gentle handling at each stage of the winemaking process to ensure wine of the highest quality and value. We want to pay respect to our deep history while continuing to learn, grow and move our winemaking forward.

In 2000, Niagara College established the Winery and Viticulture Technician program at the Daniel J. Patterson campus in Niagara-on-the-lake. The program is the first of its kind in Canada in that the Teaching Winery facilitates the learning enterprise of the program. Presently located amidst 38 acres of College vineyards, the teaching winery allows the students to have immediate access to a hands-on experience in a real-time working environment to produce award winning wines. Furthermore the program allows them to obtain skills in three specialty areas; winemaking, viticulture and sales/marketing, that will provide diverse opportunities upon graduation. Inception of this program was developed in direct consultation with the local wine industry and under the advisement of a Program Advisory Committee. In 2004, the Winery and Viticulture Technician Program received the Pinnacle Award for best supplier of graduates to the tourism industry, and was also awarded Best Program in Canada 2004 by the Association of Canadian Community Colleges.

In the fall of 2008, Niagara College opened doors to the new post graduate certificate program in Wine Business Management. This intense program uses college science labs, a wine sensory lab, the vineyards, on-site wine equipment, and the Niagara College Teaching Winery Campus Wine Store. This program will provide graduates with a well-rounded business education and a very specialized practical training required for successful operations of future growth in Canadian wine, hospitality and tourism industries. This is the first and only Wine Business Program in Canada.

Niagara-on-the-Lake has been home to the Palatine Hills Estate for over four decades. Family owned and operated, the farm and vineyard was founded by John and Barbara Neufeld. Early on they recognized the potential their land had and a vision for what they wanted their winery to become.

Winemaking begins in the vineyard, a founding principle of the Neufeld family that still rings true today. As expert grape growers, the family has taken great pride in growing and transforming Palatine Hills for decades, pushing the boundaries of what it means to be a winery.

Fast forward to today, Palatine Hills still remains a family affair, with two generations of Neufeld’s bringing their passion to the winery and all that they do. The winery continues to be rooted in tradition but the Neufeld’s are always looking forward to the future and adventures ahead.

Expressing the terroir, our “sense of place” in our wines is the main goal at Redstone.

This requires a respect for the land and what it gives back and utilizing minimal intervention winemaking techniques to capture the unique terroir that exists here on the Twenty Mile Bench.

Our grapes are picked and sorted by hand or by our state-of-the-art harvester and optical sorter, reducing waste and keeping the very best for winemaking.

Fostering the health of our vines and the soil they grow on requires a labour-intensive and hands-on approach. The 38-acre estate vineyard, farmed organically, is perfect for maturing late-ripening varietals including Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.

Organic farming feeds the vines and controls diseases without the use of synthetic insecticides, fungicides and fertilizers. We strive to create a diversified balanced ecosystem that generates health and fertility from the vineyard itself. Healthy vines mean less need for outside substances to control diseases and promote growth.

One of Niagara-on-the-Lake's founding family wineries, established in 1982 by The Reif Family, and later fulfilled by Klaus W. Reif. Today, Reif produces wines from its 125-acre vineyard first planted in 1977 and is in the Niagara River sub-appellation where sun-loving grape varieties grow most excellently. A long growing season is refined by the river, as air currents hinder early spring and late fall frosts.

Our vineyard is planted in Ontario’s warmest sub-appellation which is ideal to produce rich full-bodied wines. Our farm is also home to some of the oldest vinifera plantings in Canada—a benefit to growers in cooler climates like Ontario, as mature vines ripen earlier. They also produce wines that reflect the ‘terroir', so when you taste our wines, you will taste the essence of our vineyard.

Founder, Moray Tawse purchased his Cherry Avenue property in 2000 and opened his six level, state-of-the-art winery in 2005.

The architecture of the winery was carefully conceived to be environmentally friendly. Many of our wines are aged in underground cellars, maintaining an ambient temperature between 10 and 16 degrees Celsius, with a natural humidity of approximately 85%. This relatively stable temperature and high humidity allows the wine to age gracefully with a minimum amount of evaporation.

Our modern geo thermal energy system has reduced our use of traditional forms of energy by 80%. Additionally, we employ a wetland bio-filter which allows us to re-use our sanitary and winery process water.

It’s been over 32 years since Trius Red, a Bordeaux blend-inspired wine produced by Hillebrand Winery, burst onto the international wine scene when it became the first-ever Canadian vintage to be recognized as the Best Red Wine in the World in 1991. In addition to positioning Trius Red as the little big red that could, the win marked an important step for the Canadian wine industry, sending a signal that our country’s wine could stand on their own against old world wines.

More than three decades later, Trius Red continues to be recognized as one of Canada’s most iconic wines, but this shining star has been joined by many more buzzed about companions in the Trius portfolio.

While Trius Red was originally the only Trius wine in the Hillebrand Winery portfolio, over time our portfolio grew to include sparkling wines and other offerings including Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling. As more and more Canadian wine lovers discovered Trius and wanted to visit the winery where the wines were being produced, it was a logical next step to align the Hillebrand Winery property with its most beloved brand. In 2012, Trius Winery was born.

Ask Trius Winemaker, Craig McDonald about the winery’s history and he’s quick to point out that what’s in the bottle has and will always be more important than the name that is on the label, “The heart and soul of all of our wines comes from the one-of-a-kind vineyards where we grow our grapes. It’s factors like the sun-soaked shale that our vines sink their roots into and convection currents from Lake Ontario that cool down hot summer nights, those are things that have the greatest impact on our wines. Celebrating that connection between the land and our wines is at the heart of everything in creating iconic wines for Canadians to enjoy.”

As a young child, Wayne Gretzky watched in fascination as his grandfather picked and pressed his own grapes, carefully tended his collection of wooden barrels and bottled his own wine. Decades later, inspired by family tradition and motivated by his unfaltering commitment to hard work and achieving excellence, Wayne set his sights on making his own great Canadian wine. His goal was simple: to create a collection of wines that people might buy once because of the name on the label, but would choose to enjoy again and again once they discovered the quality of the wine itself.

The positive reaction that wine critics and wine lovers alike had to his portfolio of Niagara and Okanagan wines soon planted another seed in Wayne’s mind. Watching what his team could do with Canadian grapes made him wonder what might happen if they expanded their focus to include Canadian whiskies made from locally sourced grains. His overarching philosophy for this new chapter remained consistent: Whatever your craft, do it well.

In the spring of 2017, passionate wine enthusiasts, whisky aficionados and hockey fans gathered to celebrate the opening of the all-new Wayne Gretzky Estates Winery and Distillery in the heart of Niagara-on-the-Lake wine country. The 23,000-square foot facility nestled amongst the grapevines is the first combined winery and distillery in Ontario and another shining example of the great things that happen when The Great One is leading the team.

  • Beth Ashton meets her Prince Charming.

Prince Charming is an inline smoker, just like Cinderella, Beth’s original inline cooker. So the firebox is on the opposite side to the chimney. He is made out of an old propane tank, and has horseshoes welded on for handles. The round shape of the tank allows smoke to circulate, and the thickness of the steel tank keeps the heat even.

We smoke with sugar maple, and all of our meats get a garlic and pepper dry rub.
